decorative Save the date! Saturday February 23 2008

welcome

130 of our 257 registered riders were brave enough or crazy enough to turn out on Saturday! These hardy riders along with our devoted team of volunteers turned our sixth annual Frostbite Tour on Saturday into a success despite the odds. Mother Nature provided our most challenging conditions yet, with steady rain throughout the day and temperatures dropping in the afternoon from a relatively balmy mid-50?s earlier in the morning.

Michael O'Malley, associate director of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, spoke to the assembled crowd just before the 9 a.m. take-off. He reminded us of time: the time Dave spent living life to the fullest. The time that cancer stole from him. And the time researchers and doctors devote to gaining time for their esophageal cancer patients.

The challenging conditions and economic times didn't stop our volunteers from putting together a well-supported ride and raising about $9,000 after expenses to add to our growing pot of available research grant funding. With close to $50,000 in the bank, our board will seek grants and make another large donation to basic science research relating to esophageal cancer later this year. We'll keep you posted.

To all of you who contributed donations, baked items, and most importantly shared your time and commitment: THANK YOU! Saturday's blustery day posed a huge challenge. We've learned over the years that our Frostbite biking community exemplifies perseverance and community spirit, and we were so proud to see both in action during Saturday's rainstorm!

Donation

Sleep in for the Ride! Please consider adding a donation to your fee, and soliciting donations in support of your ride. Your donations raise awareness of gastroesophageal cancers and fund research seeking causes and treatment options. Riders like you have funded a team of researchers whose ongoing work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University studies the effect of aspirin on genes that help check cell growth and tumor development. Read more about the first of two Foundation grants to Dr. Nicholas Shaheen (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Dr. Luke Chen (NC Central University).
